What is Jesus Doing Now?
After Jesus’ resurrection, we know that He spent 40 days on earth in His resurrected body before He ascended to heaven. So, what’s He doing now, and where is Jesus today? Where is He seated, and why is this important for us?
That’s as complex as His dual nature – fully God, fully man.
He is with us and in us, as He promised to be, but He is also seated in heaven. Unless Jesus is in heaven, where is He? What can He do for us?
Where is Jesus?
Jesus is “seated” because He finished His work. Everything He was sent to earth to do, He accomplished. So, what is He doing now?
He is Exercising His Divine Authority
1 John 3
8 The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.
Ephesians 1
19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength 20 he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. 22 And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.
Some suggest that Christ’s victory at Calvary was decisive. He is in the mopping-up phase during this time, even while the enemy is still thrashing about. The main point here is that Christ is now reigning in heaven for us, and we have full access to His authority as followers.
One example of spiritual warfare is Satan batting against Christians and non-Christians through temptations that lead to sin, which increases His power over an individual. The non-Christian has very little defensive strength and no offensive strength.
Satan’s Kingdom suffers no damage at the hands of nonbelievers.
Christians have spiritual armor for defense, prayer, and spirit-filled living as offensive weapons. When Christ-loving, God-honoring, Holy Spirit-filled people live the way God intended, that is a huge rebuke to God’s enemy. Our righteous living and deeds demonstrate and dramatize Satan’s failure.
So, when are you doing spiritual warfare?
Our job is to use Jesus’s authority on earth, be spiritual warriors, and know and use our spiritual gifts.
He is Interceding and Advocating for Us
Hebrews 7
23 Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; 24 but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. 25 Therefore he is able to save completely[a] those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.
26 Such a high priest truly meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens.
Who is He praying for? Those who come to God through Him.
Who is He praying to? Abba, who Jesus called “Father.”
As we pray on earth, Jesus brings our prayers to the Father. Jesus is the only mediator we need, the only One the Father will accept. We pray best when we pray about the things He is concerned about. That’s another way we do His work on earth.
He is Building His Church
Matthew 16
18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
Not hell, but death. Not about death conquering the church, but about the church conquering death. Death cannot succeed against the strength of the Church, which is resurrection.
One important aspect of Jesus’ ongoing work is that He is building His church, and the gates of death, Satan’s delight, will not prevail against it.
That is a promise that continues. Jesus is building His church, a great encouragement in the face of opposition and persecution. Whatever happens, we can be confident in the promise that Jesus is building His church. Not even death can destroy the work of God, and Jesus said this to Peter before the crucifixion and resurrection.
He builds His church by equipping us. In Ephesians, Paul tells us that Christ gave the apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers to “equip the saints for the work of ministry for building up the body.” Christ equips believers by giving us people who are gifted as overseers, preachers, evangelists, Bible teachers, and shepherds who prepare us to do the ministry of building the church.
He is Preparing a Place for His Followers
John 14
1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.
Jesus wants us to be with Him eternally. He is preparing a place for us, He wants all His family to be together, and He is getting ready for it.

Where is Jesus?
- 1 Peter 3
22 who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him. - Philippians 2
9 Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth - Psalm 110
1 The Lord says to my lord: “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.” - Hebrews 8
1 Now the main point of what we are saying is this: We do have such a high priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of Majesty in heaven, 2 and who serves in the sanctuary, the true tabernacle set up by the Lord, not by a mere human being.

So, when are you doing spiritual warfare?
- When you speak truth lovingly
- When you do not covet more riches or lust after other people
- When you engage in social justice
- When you are honorable with your finances
- When you humbly help the less fortunate
- When you tell others the Good News about Jesus
- When you read God’s Word, pray, worship, and participate in fellowship with other believers
